Some say chocolates are heavenly, others insist they are sinful…

When it comes to chocolates, Chris Weck knows his truffles, and it shows. Chris’s store, Sinful Sweets, is located at the corner of 9th and Penn, in downtown Pittsburgh. When you walk in, your eyes will feast on the showcases filled with cupcakes, cake pops, truffles, barks, and chocolate-covered – everything. Your nose is entertained, too, with the warm, earthy, sweet fragrance of chocolate. Not to be left out, your palate will be delighted when you taste his decadent chocolates. Especially savory is his hot chocolate – frothed milk mixed with melted chocolate straight from the vats of liquid chocolate he uses for almost everything in the store.

When customers enter the store, Chris greets them, often by name, and always with a smile. You’d never know he’d been up since 6 a.m., hand dipping as many as a thousand chocolates before the store opens. In the days running up to Valentine’s Day, Chris is often at the store by 4 a.m., working until after 8 p.m. – it’s one of his busiest times of the year.

His casual appearance – t-shirt, jeans, tattoo-covered arms – and genuine interest in his customers makes everyone feel welcome to stop in and try something new. It’s that as much as his chocolates that keeps his customers coming back for more. His passion for chocolate shows in his enthusiasm and creativity; he loves dipping dried fruits, nut clusters, pretzels, and blending local flavors (like local microbrew beers and liquors) into his truffles. It’s a far cry from the corporate world he left to start this shop a mere five years back in Lawrenceville. After the Lawrenceville building his store was in was sold, he relocated to his current location, and business has boomed. This self-starter has a passion for excellence and makes it his mission to provide fantastic chocolate with premium ingredients, presented beautifully.

Chris not only loves his job and his company, he loves his products too. He told us that he once made his dad a special cupcake for his birthday. On the bus ride to see his dad, he ate the treat. “It looked really good, “ Chris said, laughing, “so I ate it.”
